Erie Bay Christmas - getting there

Tuesday, January 7, 2014

packing
This year we celebrated the birth of Jesus in a rather unique and out of the way place... It was quite a challenge getting there. At one, exhausting, point I did some self-talk "think positive Liz and remember... at least you are not pregnant and riding a donkey."

The house we stayed in was only accessible by boat... and we don't have a boat. That meant that we needed to take everything in and make sure we had enough - but not too much.

We were "off the grid" but had solar power, gas appliances and and a wetback boiler for hot water. It was a nice comfortable house - but felt a little bit like camping.

It was a challenge getting there
- left the house at midnight
- 7 hours drive to Wellington
- 3 hour ferry ride to Picton
- 6 hour "layover"
- 1 hour boat ride to our house

the "layover" was an unexpected addition to travel time. Ben's parents were meeting us (a super fun surprise to the kids) and they missed a connecting flight in Auckland. It was a beautiful day - Ben and I took turns napping by the pirate playground in the quaint town of Picton. Jude ate ice cream and got almost everything he wanted for the rest of the day.

We finally got to the house at around 7:00 pm (19 hours after we left) - everyone was really tired but excited about the week ahead.
